Advent Theatre Celebrates 32 years

2013 Spring Season "Bullshot Crummond"

British detective stories have a few things in common: wild goose chase adventures, unthinkable mishaps, and innumerous missed clues. In this parody of a 1930s sleuth movie, the dashing Captain Hugh "Bullshot" Crummond - WWI ace fighter pilot, Olympic athlete, racing driver, part-time sleuth and all round spiffing chap - must save the world from the dastardly Count Otto Van Bruno, his wartime adversary. And, of course, win the heart of a jolly nice young lady.

From the Tolucan Times:
Played with bravado by Ben Gillman, the hero is more like an English Clouseau. He means well though. Enter the villain, Otto Von Brunno (the charismatic John Paul De Leonardis) who with femme fatale Lenya Von Brunno (a spot-on Glenda Morgan Brown) hatches a devious plan for world domination. They must kidnap Professor Rupert Fenton (a superb Doug Haverty — whose talent at multiple roles is short of inspiring) whose secret formula in the wrong hands can manifest world chaos. Once word reaches Bullshot, the game is afoot. He gains a worthy and lovely ally, Miss Rosemary Fenton (the adorable Deneen Melody). Of course she is the professor’s daughter, but that is the beauty of it. The elements of the show work extremely well. The script is clever, and the staging is creative and vibrant. Director JC Gafford utilizes the actor’s dynamics in a most ingenious way.

History

The Advent Theatre began in 1981, through the dream of Gilmer McCormick Reinhardt, Stephen Reinhardt, Jeanne Lange and David Haskell, four young people from the original New York cast of the landmark 1971 production of GODSPELL, found themselves a church home at First Christian Church of North Hollywood. Inspired by Senior Pastor Robert Bock, they proposed to present a reunion production to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of GODSPELL.

Deek Smith (then head of the grip dept. at Universal Studios) brought his extensive experience (and several studio grips) to help design and construct the initial theatre seating and also donated the money to build the lighting grid.

The plan was to have a six week run. But word got out and people kept coming to see the show…it was extended for six months! It became a Los Angeles phenomenon. Former cast members from the myriad companies that toured the world with the original play came to reconnect with the palpable, contagious spirit of the story.

The Advent Theatre is dedicated to the community in which it serves. Outreach through the arts has proven to be a viable means of touching lives. By offering plays and musical entertainment with an intention to raise social consciousness and community awareness, we hope to reach, teach and uplift the human spirit.
