THE
PLAY
brings the life of one of the great heroes of the twentieth century to the stage. The audience is brought into the prison cell where Bonhoeffer awaits execution and listens to his struggles with evil, injustice, and God.
In the play, Bonhoeffer tells of the profound influence of fellow Union Theological student, Frank Fisher, an African-American friend who introduced Dietrich to the blight of racism in America.
Prisoner Bonhoeffer expresses moral outrage against the Nazi treatment of Jews and explains how that outrage led him to become involved in the German resistance movement, a commitment that would result in his being executed by hanging on April 9, 1945.
THE REVIEWS
"I was deeply moved by Al Staggs' one-man show on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Its serious grappling with the profound moral issues raised by Bonhoeffer's life and death provides an especially effective way of placing these elemental moral and religious issues before the public. I recommend it to others with enthusiasm and without reservation."

AL STAGGS
Al discovered his performing abilities when he began to impersonate famous comedians for his high school classmates and teachers. Following a stint in the U.S. Army as a draftee he turned his attention to obtaining the necessary education for service as a minister.
During the period of his post graduate studies he was increasingly drawn to those individuals in recent history who had devoted their lives to justice and peace concerns. After two decades of working as a parish minister he came to terms with the fact that his real passions related to performing and to working for peace and justice.
Twenty years ago Al combined those two passions by writing and performing a one-person play that takes his audience into the prison cell of the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A few years later he took the step of leaving the pastoral ministry and began a career as a full-time performing artist, adding characterizations of Clarence Jordan, Archbishop Oscar Romero, Thomas Merton and Walter Rauschenbusch to his repertoire of programs. He finds great satisfaction in bringing these notable figures to life and sharing their relevant messages with audiences throughout the world.
Al Staggs holds a B.A. from Hardin-Simmons University, an M.R.E. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Th.M. from Harvard Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He also completed a year internship in Clinical Pastoral Education at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas,Texas.
In the spring of 1983 he was honored as a Charles E. Merrill Fellow at Harvard with major emphasis in Applied Theology under the direction of Harvey Cox.
Al served as a minister and hospital chaplain prior to becoming a full-time performing artist

GLENDA
MORGAN BROWN (Artistic Director)
Glenda has been directing theatre for more than a quarter of a century (she started as a toddler). While living in the Akron, Ohio, area, she shared season directing duties with her husband, David Colwell, at the Coach House Theatre. Some of her favorite projects include THE CONSTANT WIFE, DIAL ‘M’ FOR MURDER, PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES, and of course, the Advent Theatre’s GREATER TUNA, LEND ME A TENOR, SHADOWLANDS, GREETINGS!, AN INSPECTOR CALLS, THE FANTASTICKS, LATER LIFE, BLITHE SPIRIT and our upcoming LITTLE WOMEN.
In addition to directing, Glenda enjoys acting: recently, she’s been seen on the big screen (SUDDEN DEATH) and television shows, including 7th HEAVEN, BOSTON LEGAL, THE WEST WING, ACCORDING TO JIM, and more. Glenda would like to thank everyone involved in making A VIEW FROM THE UNDERSIDE: THE LEGACY OF DIETRICH BONHOEFFER come together, expecially David for his constant love and support, and you, the audience, for being here. |

JERRY L. JACKSON (Producing Director)
Jerry has spent most of his adult life in the film business as a cinematographer,
editor, development executive, and an award-winning writer/director and producer... always in varying stages of blissful denial or semi-violent protest
of his attraction to the boards.
He even spent time studying with Lee Strasberg and claimed it was all
to be a better writer/director. Now he also teaches acting. Go figure...
As an actor, he first trod the Advent Theatre's boards as Bob Cratchett opposite Bill Hayes' Scrooge in our adaptation of Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL in 1988, and most recently as Gerald Croft in J.B. Priestley's AN INSPECTOR CALLS. He also produced our BLITHE SPIRIT, MISSION: INCREDIBLE! and our upcoming production of LITTLE WOMEN.
Jerry's an Elder at FCCNH and a member since 1987 (sons Sean and Matthew both graduated from the Nursery School here). If he looks familiar, it may be that you bought your Christmas tree from our annual tree lot... he's co-chaired it since 1997. Jerry also wrote, directed, and co-produced the feature film drama WRESTLING WITH GOD based on the life of Alexander Campbell, one of the founders of the Disciples of Christ. Jerry is an active member of the WGA (chairs the New Members Committee) and SAG. |

TODD BURGESS (Stage Manager)
Todd has acted in four Advent Theatre productions (SHADOWLANDS, THE FANTASTICKS, LATER LIFE, JOHNNY GUITAR) and this is his first as Stage Manager. He says it's a pleasure working with both familiar faces as well as new ones. He'd like to thank Glenda for having him read for his past roles and for the opportunity take on this new responsibility. "Love to Mom, Dad, Jay, Sandi, Chirstopher, Jeff, Patti, Alexandra and Trace for the support and encouragement through rehearsals and permormances. I'd like to send a big THANK YOU out to you, the audience, for your love and support of the Advent Theatre." |
