| In the early 1920's, the farming community of Lankershim
was nestled at the foot of Barham Pass, on the railroad which connected
with the outlying communities of Van Nuys, Reseda and Chatsworth. Lankershim
was a bustling community at the edge of the vast San Fernando Valley which
measured 22 by 11 miles.
In January of 1924, the Christian Church in Los Angeles sponsored an evangelical tent meeting in Lankershim. As a result of those meetings the First Christian Church of Lankershim was chartered on March 1, 1924. The church was affiliated with the religious brotherhood known as the Chrisitan Church (Disciples of Christ), whose international headquarters were in Indianapolis, Indiana. The church struggled for several years, led both by laity and part-time ministers. It met for Sunday morning worship in a variety of buildings until the mid-1930's, when it located in the "little chapel" near the corner of Tujunga and Moorpark. In 1949, thriving on the rapid post-war growth of Southern California, the church secured the property on the corner of Colfax and Moorpark. There they built the beautiful southern colonial sanctuary and educational building which has become a landmark in this community. As the city of North Hollywood absorbed Lankershim and its surroundings, the church became known as the First Christian Church of North Hollywood. In 1951, the church founded the Christian Nursery School. In 1981, following a six-month run of the Broadway musical Godspell, starring seven of the original cast members, the church founded The Advent Theatre. In 1982, the church began the Christmas Tree Lot in support of children's charities. In 1983, the church was one of the five founders of the Interfaith Food Pantry and has always been the Pantry distribution center. In 2000, the church began it's annual Community Health Fair. In over 50 years, the church has had only three pastors. Merle E. Fish, Jr. served from 1943 to 1957, leading the congregation into its present church home. Ray Wallace led the church successfully from 1958 to 1968 during very difficult social times. Our present pastor, Robert M. Bock, came to the church in 1969. His deep commitment to the local parish as a vital part of the "Church of the World" has continued to lift the conciousness of the congregation toward a ministry of Christian service centered in the community. In recent years, the church has been the second fastest growing congregation of the 130 in the Pacific Southwest Region of the Christian Chruch (Disciples of Christ). People of varying denominational backgrounds have found a loving church home in the First Christian Church of North Hollywood. We invite you to share with us in the worship and fellowship! |
