Advent Theatre

The Advent Theatre began in 1981 when several members of the original New York cast of the landmark 1971 play Godspell, found themselves in Los Angeles attending FCCNH. In true thespian fashion, the idea came to do a 10-year reunion show at the church. Many members of our church combined their talents, skills, technical, artistic, design, and business experiences together to form The Advent Theatre.

The Godspell show was scheduled for 6 weeks, but was such a success in the church and community it ran for six months! Our Pastor Bob Bock reportedly only missed six performances. From that success, the Advent Theatre grew into one of the most successful small theatres in the area with the direction and support of the founding members, Gilmer & Stephen Reinhardt, Jeanne Lange & David Haskell and with the encouragement of notables like Gordon Davidson, founding artistic director of the Mark Taper theatre. Over the years there have been many productions including musicals, classics, comedies, family shows, single character, and original plays. In 1988 nearly 100 people took part in a new adaptation of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol starring Bill Hayes. Among the many shows presented were Blithe Spirit, The Fantasticks, Cinderella, The Good Doctor and Ten Little Indians.

All of the shows were produced and presented by volunteers in our church family. Many of those folks are still active in our congregation like Glenda Morgan Brown, Molly Wilson, Dino Schofield, Bill & Susan Hayes, Ken & Barbara Campbell, Karl Klein, Jacqui Dixon, Robin Stallings, Deborah Dietrich, Beth Owen, Denise Ovaldson, and Terri Hall... to name a few. All proceeds were distributed between outside charities and various needs of our church.

The Advent Theatre Mission Statement is to provide high-quality theatre that inspires others to seek, out and strengthen their own journey with God.
