First Christian Church of North Hollywood is looking for a warm, caring, and talented Music Director to lead our music program. Our ideal candidate will be well-educated in choral and other styles of Christian music, an accomplished musician, and an excellent teacher and communicator. We desire a person who is Christian and interested in programming liturgical music in coordination with the Senior Pastor to create interesting and moving worship experiences.

The Music Director will be organized, personable, and able to interact with a large community, including a chancel choir, organist, piano accompanist, guest musicians, soloists and small groups, the Children’s Music Director, children, the online worship and sound team, church staff and committees, as well as those plannings weddings, funerals, or other special occasions. 

Title:               DIRECTOR OF MUSIC / CHORAL CONDUCTOR

Work Load:   Average 20 hours per week, recognizing that at certain times of the year (e.g., Christmas, Easter) your position will require more hours

Education:     Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited college or university, Master’s degree preferred

Skills:             Excellent choral and instrumental conducting skills; keyboard proficiency; Strong community-building and leadership qualities

Bonus Skills:  Singing, Piano soloing, Playing Guitar, Writing original music, Playing pipe organ (Schantz Opus 1110/Rodgers hybrid)

Experience:   Three to five years experience as Director of Music or similar position          

Reports To:    Senior Pastor and Staff Council

Salary:            $25,000–32,000 plus vacation and benefits, negotiable based on overall skills and experience

Start Date;     September 2024

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Programming of all music for weekly services
  • Research and selection of anthems for all services
  • Selection, coordination and/or rehearsal of special music for services as needed
  • Work and coordinate with senior pastor and associate pastor on weekly hymns and other music for all services
  • Selection of choral introits and responses
  • Delivery of above selections to church office and senior pastor by noon each Wednesday
  • Rehearsal of choir once weekly for 90 minutes and one-half hour prior to morning service
  • Rehearse special music as needed (usually before or after choir rehearsal)
  • Train and educate choir in choral technique
  • Oversee music budget
  • Coordinate with the office to order needed materials for the choir: folders, robes, etc.
  • Provide expert substitutes when needed when director of music is unavailable
  • Aid organist in appropriation of subs as needed
  • Hire additional musicians when needed for special events such as concerts and services such as Easter, Christmas, Christmas Eve Family Service, etc., and provide music charts as needed
  • Attend worship committee meetings (1st Monday of each month)
  • Organize and catalog repertoire as needed
  • Plan and prepare Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and 3 Easter services for Holy Week
  • Produce a Christmas concert
  • Coordinate with the online worship team and audio department
  • Coordinate with and assist Children’s Music Director as needed
  • Schedule tuning and maintenance of instruments
  • Maintain music library
  • Communicate with choir members electronically (e.g., weekly reminders/email)
  • Actively recruit, engage, and mentor our choirs and musicians
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with singers
  • May include other duties as directed by the Senior Pastor (e.g., memorial services)
